"Sloughing off the rot" is somewhat similar to Nick Hornby's "About a boy". There are musical references, the narrative isn't pretentious and the main character is extremely likable, despite all his flaws (and he has many). Also, there's something childish about him, perhaps because he is a man without a past. But "Sloughing" is way crazier. Trying to slice off the hairy skin of a kiwi can waste a lot of flesh in the process. A more efficient way is to cut it into rounds then pick the skin off. It will come away easily. Sloughing Off the Rot by Lance Carbuncle was the perfect book to read on the Mayan Apocalypse. Any Carbuncle book is a wild journey, and this was the wildest yet. It's the literary equivalent of eating mushrooms with John of Patmos while listening to Ornette Coleman. The story is framed as the coma-hallucination of a severely flawed human being.

Baum Lewis Carroll then he bursts that vein, infecting the reader with his own unique brand of fantasy. Guided along El Camino de la Muerte by a demented madman and a philosophical giant, John sets out on a quest to fill in his blank slate and slough off the rot of his soul. Part dark comedy road trip, part spiritual quest, and part horror story, Sloughing Off the Rot is literary alchemy about John's transformation from repugnant wretch to reluctant hero.
